Ranzania is a genus of perennial herbs in the Berberidaceae family, with its only species being Ranzania japonica. It is found in woodlands in the mountains of Honshu, Japan and is named after Ono Ranzan, a renowned Japanese botanist. The plant has fleshy stems that grow from an underground rhizome and bear two trifoliate compound leaves. Between the leaves, there is a small cluster of drooping mauve flowers that develop into white berries. Ranzania is occasionally used in shade gardens in the western world. Its taxonomy has undergone changes, previously being placed in the Ranzaniaceae family and combined into the genus Podophyllum. The plant has a haploid chromosome number of n=7.
