Protea nitida, also known as wagon tree, waboom or blousuikerbos, is a slow-growing tree endemic to South Africa. It is one of the few Protea species that grows into trees and is the only one with usable timber. It has thick white-grey bark and can reach up to 10 meters in height. The tree produces large, bisexual flower heads throughout the year and its nuts are released about a year after flowering. It is found in the Cape Peninsula and Eastern Cape, and is not considered threatened, although it has been cleared in some areas for timber. Its common names, such as wagon tree and waboom, come from its historical use in making wagon wheels. It is listed as 'least concern' by the South African National Biodiversity Institute.
