Protea laetans, also known as the Blyde River protea or Blyde sugarbush, is a plant belonging to the Proteaceae family. It was identified as a species in 1970 and is found exclusively in the Blyde River Canyon of the Mpumalanga escarpment in South Africa. These plants can grow up to 5m tall and bloom during mid to late summer. The closed flower heads have shiny and silvery bracts, giving them a unique appearance. The best place to see these plants is near the F.H. Odendaal camp in the Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve. The name "laetans" means joyous, reflecting the beauty and joy this plant brings to the Blyde River Canyon.
