Protea inopina, also known as the large-nut sugarbush, is a unique flowering shrub that is part of the well-known Protea genus. This rare plant is only found in the Olifants River mountains near Palace Hill in the Western Cape. It grows up to 1 meter tall and has multiple stems, blooming from September to December. After being burned, the plant is able to sprout again. Its seeds are stored in a shell and are dispersed by the wind. The plant is unisexual and relies on birds for pollination. It thrives in sandstone soil at altitudes of 600-650 meters.
