Protea effusa, also known as the scarlet sugarbush, is a flowering plant native to the Western Cape province of South Africa. It was first described by Carl Meissner in 1856 and is named after the German explorer Johann Franz Drège who collected the first specimens. The plant is known for its glaucous leaves, bowl-shaped flower heads, and variability in appearance, with some forms growing as a ground-hugging shrub and others as an erect shrub. It is found in mountainous regions at altitudes of 1,200 to 1,800 metres and is pollinated by rodents. Cultivation of this species can be challenging and it is considered a near threatened species due to habitat loss and climate change. However, it is protected in several nature reserves in South Africa.
