Protea aspera, also known as rough leaf sugar bush or aardroos suikerbos, is a flowering shrub native to South Africa. It is a part of the popular Protea genus and can be found in the Kleinrivierberge, Bredasdorpberge, and Garcia's Pass regions. This shrub is low-growing, forming a dense mat and reaching a height of only 50 cm. It produces beautiful flowers from September to December, with the peak bloom occurring in September and October. After a fire, the plant regenerates and produces seeds that are dispersed by wind. The plant is unisexual and may be pollinated by mammals. It thrives in shale and sandy soil at elevations of 0 to 200 m. Unfortunately, Protea aspera is considered a vulnerable species due to threats such as habitat destruction.
