Orothamnus, also known as marsh rose, is a rare and endangered monotypic fynbos genus in the Proteaceae family. It is found in the Kogelberg and Kleinrivier Mountains of Hottentots-Holland in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. The plant is an erect, sparsely branched shrub that can grow up to 5 meters tall. It was first depicted by Jean Villet, a Capetonian artist and dealer in natural history specimens, in 1848. The species, Orothamnus zeyheri, is extremely rare and endangered and appears on CITES Appendix I. It has a short lifespan of 10-20 years and is easily killed by fire. However, its seeds can remain viable for over 35 years and are deposited by ants. The pollinating agent for this plant is unknown. Orothamnus grows in peaty swamps and seeps at altitudes of 450-850 meters. The plant faces threats from low germination rates, predation by the Saunders' Vlei Rat, and the fungus Phytophthora. However, successful grafting onto Leucospermum rootstock has given hope for the species'
