Faurea saligna is a semi-deciduous tree of the Proteaceae family, native to tropical Africa and parts of South Africa. It can grow up to 10 metres tall, or up to 20 metres in forest conditions. Its bark is dark-grey to black and deeply fissured, while its narrow, drooping leaves resemble those of a willow. The timber of this tree was highly prized by the Voortrekkers for furniture, and was named Transvaal Boekenhout for its resemblance to European Beech. The genus Faurea was named after William Caldwell Faure, a young soldier and enthusiastic botanist who was killed in India in 1844.
