Eidothea hardeniana, also known as nightcap oak, is a newly discovered species of tree in the Proteaceae family. It was identified by botanist Robert Kooyman in 2002 and is only found in the Nightcap Range in northern New South Wales, Australia. The species is critically endangered and is listed on both the Australian Commonwealth EPBC Act and the NSW Threatened Species Act. It is named after botanist Gwen Harden and is believed to be a basal branch of the Proteoid clade. The trees grow in warm temperate rainforest in poor, acidic volcanic soils and are known for their pale, lichen-covered bark. They have the ability to survive bushfires through coppicing and seed reproduction. The flowers are cream-colored and have a distinct aniseed scent, while the fruits are large and rounded with a ribbed nut inside. The plant is currently being cultivated in various locations, including the Royal Botanic Gardens in Sydney. However, its habitat was greatly affected by bushfires in 2019-2020, with only a small number of plants surviving.
