Elegia tectorum, also known as Cape thatching reed, dakriet, Chondropetalum tectorum, and Restio tectorum, is a tufted perennial native to the Western and Eastern Cape of South Africa. It was originally noted by Carl Linnaeus the Younger and has been used for thatching, making brooms and baskets, and more recently, in horticulture. Carl Peter Thunberg and John Lindley also noted its use in thatching. Cladistic analysis conducted by Moline and Linder (2005) found that the genera of Chondropetalum and Dovea were imbedded in Elegia. In the UK, the plant has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
