Zizania latifolia, also known as Manchurian wild rice, is a wetland plant native to Asia that is used as a food source. It is the only member of the wild rice genus Zizania found in Asia and was once an important grain in ancient China. Today, it is rare in the wild and is mainly cultivated for its edible stems. The success of the crop depends on a smut fungus, and the plant is propagated asexually through rhizomes. The galled stems are harvested and consumed as a vegetable known as jiaobai in China. However, it has been accidentally introduced as an invasive species in places like New Zealand and Hawaii. The importation of its stems to the United States is prohibited to protect native wild rice species. Zizania latifolia has also been used in research, as it can be crossed with ordinary rice and its genome has been sequenced.
