Zea diploperennis, also known as the diploperennial teosinte, is a type of grass in the Poaceae family and a wild relative of maize. It is a perennial plant and is found in a small area of only a few square miles. Due to its limited distribution, this teosinte is considered threatened or endangered. To protect these populations, the governments of Mexico and Nicaragua have implemented conservation methods both in their natural habitat and in controlled environments. Scientists are also interested in using the beneficial traits of Z. diploperennis, such as insect resistance, perennialism, and flood tolerance, to improve cultivated maize lines. However, this is a challenging task due to the presence of linked deleterious traits in teosinte. Additionally, researchers are studying the genes of Z. diploperennis as they provide resistance against Striga, a parasitic plant that can reduce maize yields.
