Thyrsostachys siamensis is a bamboo species native to Southeast Asia and also found in other countries such as Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Malaysia. It is known by various names such as long-sheath bamboo, monastery bamboo, and Thai umbrella bamboo. This plant is valued for its use as food and is commonly canned in Thailand. It has a tall height of 7 to 13m and its culm, or stem, is bright green when young and turns yellowish brown when drying. The culm sheath is cylindrical with a triangular blade and is covered with hairs on the upper surface. This bamboo species has been studied for its photoautrophic growth, which showed that shoots grown under this condition had a higher survival rate and produced more new leaves compared to those grown under photomixotrophic conditions.
