Spinifex sericeus, also known as hairy spinifex, is a perennial grass found in Australia, New Zealand, New Caledonia, and Tonga. It is an important plant for coastal dunes as it helps bind loose sand with its horizontal runners. While it has been historically used as a sand-binder, it is not suitable as a food source for livestock. The plant has branched stolons and rhizomes and its leaves have a dense rim of hairs. The male inflorescence is an orange-brown cluster of spiky racemes, while the female inflorescence is a round seed head that detaches and becomes a tumbleweed when mature. Overall, Spinifex sericeus is a valuable plant for stabilizing coastal dunes and preventing sand drift.
