Setaria viridis, also known as green foxtail or wild foxtail millet, is a hardy grass species native to Eurasia. It is often considered a subspecies of Setaria italica and is closely related to the noxious weed Setaria faberi. This annual grass can grow up to a meter long and is commonly found in urban, cultivated, and disturbed areas. It is the wild ancestor of the crop foxtail millet. Setaria viridis has a dense, compact, spikelike panicle and its spikelets are subtended by stiff bristles. It is often mistaken for S. faberi, which has soft hairs on its leaves, or S. italica, which has larger spikelets. This species has been proposed as a model for studying C4 photosynthesis and is currently being sequenced. Genetic resources are being developed and a method to break its seed dormancy has been discovered, making S. viridis a promising genetic model system.
