Saccharum robustum, also known as the robust cane, is a plant species native to New Guinea. It is an important plant for the ecology of the region, as it serves as a host for various insects. Eumetopina flavipes, a planthopper species found in South East Asia, is known to carry the sugarcane pathogen Ramu stunt disease and can also be found on S. robustum. The pink sugarcane borer, a moth species found in Papua New Guinea and other nearby islands, also feeds on S. robustum. Another moth species, Scirpophaga excerptalis, known as the white top borer or sugarcane top borer, also feeds on S. robustum. These insects play a role in the ecosystem and can have an impact on the health of the robust cane plant.
