Poa annua, also known as annual meadow grass or annual bluegrass, is a common turfgrass found in temperate climates. Despite its name, it can also be a perennial plant. It is believed to have originated from a hybrid of two other grass species. This grass has a low-growing habit and a slightly flattened stem. Its panicle is open and triangular in shape, with stalked and awnless spikelets. The leaves are vivid green, short and blunt at the tips, and have finely serrated edges. It is in flower for most of the year and produces seeds for 8 months. The name Poa comes from the Greek word for fodder grass, while annua means annual or lasting a year in Latin. It is considered a weed in some areas and is commonly found in lawns and waste ground. It has also been found as an invasive species in Antarctica and subantarctic islands.
