Pleuropogon refractus, also known as nodding semaphoregrass, is a type of grass found along the west coast of North America. It can be found in moist meadows, marshy areas, and shady forests from British Columbia to northern California. This perennial bunchgrass can grow up to 1.6 meters tall and has unique cylindrical spikelets that hang sideways off the stem, resembling semaphore signals. These spikelets can reach up to 2.5 centimeters in length and contain up to 14 flowers. As the spikelets mature, the stem may bend or nod, causing them to point downward.
