The species is a perennial grass, growing to a height of up to 1.2 m. It has a tufted habit, with narrow, linear leaves up to 25 cm long and 1 cm wide. The inflorescence is a panicle of spikelets, each containing two to three flowers. The spikelets are green to purple in color, and the flowers are yellow.
Pentameris insularis is a species of perennial grass native to the Amsterdam and Saint Paul islands. It was first described by William Hemsley in 1884 and transferred to Pentameris in 2010.
