Food and beverages (non-medicinal):
The grain is dehulled and milled into flour for flatbreads and porridge, and occasionally polished as a rice substitute. Processing involves cleaning, dehulling, parboiling (optional), milling to whole flour, and blending with other cereals to adjust texture and water absorption. In some regions the grain is malted and used as an adjunct or substrate for alcoholic fermentation.

Scientific/model use:
Paspalum scrobiculatum is used as a model system for studies of C4 photosynthesis, reproductive biology, and polyploid genetics within the grass family. It is maintained as part of community resources and gene bank accessions for comparative and functional research.
