Panicum hemitomon, also known as maidencane, is a rhizomatous perennial grass native to North America and present in South America. It grows in water or wet soils and spreads through its rhizome to form large colonies. This species is commonly found in freshwater wetlands, ditches, and disturbed areas. It is less sensitive to grazing and can tolerate flooding for several months. Maidencane is considered a keystone species as it helps stabilize soil and prevent erosion. It is used for cattle forage and hay, and is also eaten by deer, Florida panthers, and American alligators. However, it is considered a weed in cultivated fields and can become a nuisance when it grows too dense. Controlled burns are sometimes used to thin the plant.
