Panicum effusum, also known as hairy panic, is a type of grass that is native to inland Australia and can also be found in New Guinea. It is a fast-growing perennial grass that can reach up to 70 centimeters in height. The leaves have small hairs and the seed spikes can grow up to 50 centimeters in length. This grass was first described by Scottish botanist Robert Brown in 1810 and is also known by other names such as branched panic and native millet. It is found in various habitats across Australia and is considered to be of least concern on the IUCN Red List. Hairy panic is an important food source for animals like the stubble quail and is also used as a component in pastures. However, under dry conditions, it can become a nuisance as it turns into a tumbleweed and can accumulate in residential areas. This grass is also drought-tolerant and uses C4 carbon fixation, making it well-adapted to harsh conditions. It has some nutritional value for livestock and can also be used as a bush food. However, consuming large quantities of hairy panic can cause health issues for sheep.
