The Mexican weeping bamboo, also known as Otatea acuminata, is a clumping bamboo that is native to central and southern Mexico and Central America. It is a popular ornamental plant, often grown in subtropical and temperate gardens. The plant produces thick stands of culms with long, narrow leaves that cause the culms to bend or "weep" due to their weight. It can reach heights of 25 feet or more in its native habitat and is drought tolerant when established. The plant can also be grown in pots, reaching up to 6 feet tall, or in the ground where it can reach 15 feet or more with regular watering. It is easy to propagate and can spread 1-2 feet in each direction yearly. There are several subspecies and cultivars available, including the commonly cultivated Otatea acuminata subsp. aztecorum. This bamboo is well-suited to the climate and soil in Southern California and is known for its ability to maintain green leaves even under suboptimal growing conditions.
