Industrial and craft applications:
- Thatching: the culms are harvested at full maturity, air‑dried for several weeks, then bundled into sheaves. Sheaves are laid in overlapping courses, offset by half a culm length, and secured with wooden pegs or twine. The resulting roof covering is lightweight and remains functional for 5–10 years under typical rural conditions.
- Hand‑held brooms: culms are cut to 0.8–1.0 m, stripped of leaf blades, and bound into a cylindrical bundle with cotton twine. The bundle forms the broom head, which is mounted on a wooden handle for sweeping earthen floors and courtyards.
- Mats, screens and woven baskets: culms can be split into narrow strips (2–4 mm wide) and woven on simple looms. Mats are used as floor coverings, screens serve as temporary partitions, and small baskets store grain or tools.
- Grass rope: twisted bundles of culms are used in some agricultural contexts to tie together bundles of rice straw or to construct simple fences.
