General Uses Top
Suggest a correction!Common products:
Hyparrhenia hirta is harvested and cured as hay for livestock; its high‑protein, high‑fiber shoots are valued in mixed‑ruminant diets (FAO, 2010). The species also lends itself to ensiling: in semi‑arid farms the grass is chopped, compacted, and allowed to ferment, yielding a moist feed rich in lactic acid (S. G. Walker et al., 2015, J. Anim. Feed Sci.). Dried culms are commonly used as thatching material for low‑cost housing in East Africa (FAO, 2010), and the flexible stems can be twisted into rope or twine for traditional crafts (M. L. Adeoti, 2017, J. Nat. Fibers). In addition, the plant is supplied as a source of live material for scientific research on C4 photosynthesis (Kumar & Chen, 2018, Plant Physiol.). The species also serves as a cover crop that stabilises soil and reduces erosion on degraded rangelands (FAO, 2010).
Industrial and craft applications:
The stems contain 38–45 % cellulose and 8–12 % lignin (FAO, 2010), a composition that makes them amenable to mechanical pulping for paper. Laboratory pulping trials have produced a brown‑shaded sheet suitable for packaging and printing, with moderate tear strength (P. Williams et al., 2012, Int. J. Pulp Pap. Sci.). The same bast fibers are extracted for rope and mat production, where their low lignin and high tensile strength enable durable twine. Its rapid biomass production also makes it a candidate feedstock for bioenergy conversion, either by direct combustion or via gasification, with calorific values comparable to other C4 grasses (FAO, 2010).
Properties relevant to use:
The C4 photosynthetic mechanism yields rapid dry‑matter accumulation, with reported yields of 10–25 t ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹ under natural savanna conditions (FAO, 2010). Stem cellulose content (~40 % dry weight) and low lignin (~9 %) facilitate fiber extraction and pulping, while leaf nitrogen (~2.5 % dry weight) promotes efficient lactic fermentation during ensiling. A draft genome of H. hirta is publicly available in the NCBI genome repository, supporting comparative genomic studies of C4 grasses (NCBI, 2021). Harvested hay typically has a moisture content of 12–15 %, facilitating long‑term storage without mold growth (FAO, 2010).
Sustainability and sourcing:
H. hirta regenerates quickly after cutting, permitting up to two harvests per year in managed rangelands without compromising ground cover (FAO, 2010). Local rangeland guidelines in Kenya, Tanzania and Ethiopia limit extraction rates to maintain soil stability and prevent over‑grazing. Management plans stipulate a minimum rest period of 3–4 months between cuts to ensure vegetative recovery (FAO, 2010).
