Hyparrhenia hirta, also known as common thatching grass or Coolatai grass, is a species of grass found in Africa and Eurasia. It has been introduced to other continents and is considered a noxious weed in eastern Australia. In its native South Africa, it is a popular thatching grass and is also used for grazing and weaving. This perennial grass grows in clumps with tough bases and can reach heights of 30 centimetres to one metre. Its inflorescence is a panicle of hairy spikelets with long bent awns. It is a versatile plant that can thrive in various habitats, including dry conditions, rocky soils, and disturbed areas.
