Hordeum murinum, also known as wall barley or false barley, is a widespread and common species of grass that is closely related to cultivated barley. It can grow up to 30 cm in height and produces small, dry nutlets. This annual winter species is found mainly in coastal areas and is absent in most of Ireland and Scotland. It is distinct from other species due to its morphology and molecular genetics, and has barriers to cross-breeding with other Hordeum species. It has different subspecies, including H. m. ssp. leporinum, also known as hare barley. This species is adaptable to different water conditions and is used for forage and seed production. It is also a cultural symbol, being referred to as the 'Flea Dart' in England and used as an ingredient in a Chinese festival snack.
