Hordeum jubatum, also known as foxtail barley, is a perennial plant found mainly in northern North America and northeastern Siberia. It has escaped from gardens and can now be found in many countries with temperate to warm climates, where it is considered a weed. This species originated from a hybridization of an East Asian Hordeum species and a close relative of Californian H. brachyantherum. It is grown for its attractive inflorescences and is able to tolerate saline soils and a wide range of moisture levels. Foxtail barley is a pioneer species and can quickly establish itself in disturbed areas. It is a prolific seed producer, with each plant capable of producing up to 200 seeds that are dispersed by wind, machinery, and animals. The seedlings of foxtail barley have thin, vertical leaves covered in short, dense hairs. As it matures, it grows up to 100 centimeters tall and has a dense, long-awned nodding spike with greenish or purplish coloring. Foxtail barley is difficult to eradicate once established and is considered a weed due to its competitive nature and harmful effects on wildlife and livestock. It is also a host to viruses and can indirectly affect the development of field crops
