Hilaria jamesii, also known as James' galleta, is a species of grass found in the southwestern United States. It can be found in various habitats, including scrub, woodland, grassland, and desert floors. This rhizomatous perennial grass grows in bunches and can reach up to 60 cm in height. Its shallow, woody rhizome can spread up to 6 ft and helps the grass form a sod. Unlike its relative, Hilaria rigida, its stems are not fuzzy. The grass produces rectangular spikelets and spreads mainly through its rhizome rather than viable seeds. It is commonly found in the northern Mojave Desert.
