Festuca contracta, also known as tufted fescue or land tussac, is a type of grass found in subantarctic islands and coastal regions of the Southern Ocean. Its name comes from the Latin word for "compressed" or "contracted," referring to its inflorescence. This grass grows up to 80-400 mm in height with a dense, blue-green appearance and a contracted panicle. Its spikelets are 12 mm long and have scabrous glumes with a strong mid-nerve. Festuca contracta blooms from October to January and is commonly found in peaty areas on Macquarie Island, South Georgia, the Kerguelen and Falkland Islands, Tierra del Fuego, and Patagonia. It can be found at elevations up to 350 m above sea level.
