Eragrostis intermedia, also known as plains lovegrass, is a type of grass found in North and Central America, ranging from the southeastern and southwestern United States to Costa Rica. It can also be found in parts of South America. This grass grows in tufts up to 90 centimeters tall and has long leaves. Its inflorescence is a panicle with a pyramidal or ovate shape, and its spikelets can have up to 11 flowers each. The plant can reproduce through seeds or sprouting from buds at the stem bases. It is commonly found in desert grasslands, prairies, chaparrals, and other dry, sloping areas. It is also known to thrive in sandy soil and areas with bimodal precipitation patterns. This grass is one of the first plants to turn green in the spring and has been observed to increase in abundance after wildfires. It is a good source of forage for livestock and is eaten by some game birds, but its population decreases with overgrazing.
