Elymus elymoides, also known as squirreltail, is a perennial bunch grass native to most of North America west of the Mississippi River. It can be found in various ecosystems, from alpine zones to desert sage scrub to valley grasslands. This grass is a valuable food source for sheep, especially during the winter when it is small and green. However, it becomes less palatable when its awns grow long and sharp at maturity. Elymus elymoides also faces competition from invasive species such as cheat grass and crested wheatgrass, which can negatively affect its fitness and population. To preserve this grass as a food source, it is important to consider its effects on soil health and its responses to competitive forces when grown with other plants. Elymus elymoides has several subspecies, each with its own distribution range.
