Danthonia compressa, also known as mountain oatgrass, flattened oatgrass, or slender oatgrass, is a perennial bunchgrass native to eastern North America. It can be found in eastern Canada and the Eastern United States, with a limited distribution in the high elevations of the Appalachian Mountains. This grass has thin, compressed stems and most of its leaves are located at the base. Its inflorescence is a panicle with up to 17 spikelets, each with a short, bent awn. Danthonia compressa reproduces through both seeds and sprouting new stems. It is commonly found in oak and hickory forests, woods, and meadows, and is a dominant species in the Great Smoky Mountains. It can also be considered a weed in crop fields.
