Genus Cinnagrostis in Family Poaceae
In botanical taxonomy, a genus (plural genera) is a rank used to group closely related species within a family. In the hierarchy, genus sits below family and above species.
Genera are defined by shared morphological, anatomical, and genetic characteristics (for example, features of flowers, fruits, seeds, or leaves) that indicate a close evolutionary relationship among the species they contain.
Each genus can include one or more species. Examples include Rosa (roses) and Solanum (nightshades, including tomato and eggplant).

Genus Description
Suggest a correction!Cinnagrostis Griseb. is a small, perennial grass genus placed in the family Poaceae. About eight species are currently accepted in the family checklist, with a distribution confined to the high Andean region of southern Peru, Bolivia, northern Chile and northwestern Argentina (POWO, 2024; WFO, 2024). The type species most frequently cited is Cinnagrostis humilis Griseb., although the formal typification has not been universally fixed (Peterson et al., 2020).
Plants form dense tussocks with slender, erect culms. Leaves are linear, often folded, bearing a membranous ligule and a finely serrated margin; leaf bases are persistent and may be slightly ciliate. The inflorescence is a compact, often narrow panicle that can appear spike‑like; spikelets are laterally compressed, containing two to four florets. Lemmas are awned or awnless, the awn when present being short and straight; the ovary is superior and the fruit is a typical caryopsis (Soreng et al., 2022).
Species richness peaks in the central Andes, where several taxa are narrow endemics (e.g., Cinnagrostis churiensis, known only from the Chilean Andes). The genus occupies puna grassland, subalpine meadows and rocky slopes from roughly 2 800 to 4 200 m elevation, often on siliceous substrates. The high‑altitude, cool‑season habitat shapes its ecological niche (POWO, 2024).
As with most poaceous grasses, Cinnagrostis is wind‑pollinated; seed dispersal is primarily by wind, with occasional transport by small mammals. Chromosome counts reported for several Andean species are 2n = 28, indicating a base number of x = 7 (Paz et al., 2021).
Modern systematic treatments regard Cinnagrostis as a distinct genus within the tribe Poeae, but some phylogenetic studies suggest it may nest within a broader Poa clade (Soreng et al., 2022). No widely recognized subgeneric sections have been proposed; the genus remains monotypic in most classifications. Alternative placements, such as inclusion in Festuca or Poa, appear in older manuals but lack strong support (WFO, 2024).
The genus has limited economic relevance. A few species are occasionally used in rock‑garden horticulture for their fine texture and drought tolerance, but none are cultivated on a commercial scale nor used as timber or forage (Peterson et al., 2020).
Conservation concerns arise from habitat degradation caused by overgrazing, mining and climate‑driven changes in alpine ecosystems. Population data are sparse, and taxonomic clarification would aid targeted protection. Continued fieldwork and molecular study are essential to assess the risk status of the narrow‑endemic taxa (POWO, 2024).
