Chionochloa rubra, also known as red tussock grass, is a species of tussock grass endemic to New Zealand. It is one of 22 endemic species of Chionochloa in the country and has a distinctive appearance with long, slender leaves and a clean, vertical growth habit. It can grow up to 1.2m tall in moist ground and has a lifespan of several years. The plant produces seeds in response to decreased seed predation and has been found to have a lower seed production in areas with higher predation rates. Red tussock grass is typically found in tall tussock-grassland habitats and is able to adapt to a variety of soil conditions. It is also used in cultivation and has cultural significance in ancient Māori societies.
