Cenchrus biflorus, also known as Indian sandbur, is an annual grass in the Poaceae family. It is commonly found in the Sahel savannas of Africa and is also present in India. The plant has various names in different regions and is often referred to as "cram-cram" in francophone countries. It grows up to 90 cm tall and has spikelets that are 1-3 per bur. The burs of the plant can be harmful to animals as they can cause ulcers in their mouths. However, the seeds of Cenchrus biflorus are used in Rajasthan and Marwar regions of India to make bread. This little-known grain has the potential to improve nutrition, boost food security, and support sustainable landcare. It is also used as a fodder plant for ruminants. Cenchrus biflorus is an important plant in desertic areas and is considered a famine food. Its northern limit is used to define the southern boundary of the Sahara desert.
