Brachypodium pinnatum, also known as heath false brome or tor-grass, is a widespread species of grass found in temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. It typically grows in calcareous grasslands and can reach heights of 70-120 centimeters. The flowerhead is open and contains 10 to 15 erect spikelets. This plant can be found in various US states, including California, Massachusetts, and Oregon. It serves as a food source for caterpillars of some Lepidoptera species, such as the Essex skipper, and is an important host grass for Auchenorrhyncha in central Europe. It is also commonly seen blooming near low garden walls.
