Brachypodium distachyon, also known as purple false brome or stiff brome, is a grass species native to southern Europe, northern Africa, and southwestern Asia. It is closely related to major cereal grain species and has been found to have many qualities that make it an excellent model organism for functional genomics research. These include a small genome, self-fertility, a short lifecycle, and an efficient transformation system. Its genome has been sequenced and published in Nature in 2010. Brachypodium distachyon has become a popular model for studying the genetic, cellular, and molecular biology of temperate grasses, and its small size and rapid life cycle make it convenient for research purposes. It has also been found to be useful for studying crop plant diseases and evolutionary developmental biology. The International Brachypodium Initiative has been established to promote its development as a model system and provide resources for research.
