Bambusa balcooa is a large, clumping bamboo that is native to the Indian subcontinent and Indo-China. It can grow up to 25 meters in height and has a thickness of 150 millimeters. This species is highly valued in the construction industry due to its length and strength. It is also drought-resistant and has low rainfall requirements, making it a popular choice for commercial plantations. Although not native to South Africa, it has been successfully introduced and is now being recognized for its economic potential in agriculture and forestry. The Ecoplanet Bamboo Group was the first to successfully grow this species at a commercial scale, and the South African government and other corporations are now investing in its cultivation.
