Juncus textilis, also known as basket rush, is a rhizomatous perennial herb endemic to California. It grows along the coast and in the coastal mountain ranges of the southern half of the state. The plant can reach a height of 1-2 meters and has cylindrical stems with small brown sheaths for leaves. Its inflorescence splits into long branches with clusters of greenish brown flowers. This species has been historically used by Native American peoples for basket weaving, and is still used today by the Chumash people. The plant's stems can be dyed with sea plants to create different colors, and its seeds and tender white bases can be eaten as emergency rations.
