Juncus planifolius, also known as broadleaf rush, is a species of rush that is native to Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, and South America. In New Zealand, it is commonly found in wet areas such as clay, tracks, and drains. This species has recently been introduced to the northern hemisphere, with its first sighting in Hawaii in 1930 and subsequent spread to other islands. It was also discovered in Ireland in 1973 and has since become well established on the Pacific coast of North America, with its first sighting in Oregon in 1980 and California in 2008. It is believed that Juncus planifolius may have been introduced to North America as a contaminant in vines planted in cranberry bogs, but it is now spreading in native coastal bogs and potentially displacing native plants. This species can be identified by its unbranched stems, basal leaves with no distinct separation between the sheath and blade, and dark tepals.
