Juncus occidentalis, also known as western rush, is a perennial herb native to the western United States. It can be found in wet areas in various types of habitats. This plant has thin, stiff stems that can reach heights of 30-60 centimeters. Its wispy leaves grow from the base of the stem and can be up to half the length of the stem. The inflorescence contains loose bundles of flowers, with one long bract extending beyond the flowers. The flowers have green-striped brownish to reddish tepals and six stamens with small anthers. The fruit is a brown capsule enclosed by the tepals.
