Juncus mertensianus, also known as Mertens' rush or Alaska rush, is a clumping perennial herb native to western North America. It can be found in wet mountainous areas such as riverbanks and alpine meadows, from Alaska to Saskatchewan to New Mexico. This plant grows from a vertical rhizome and has smooth, flat stems that can reach up to 40 centimeters in height. Its few leaves are located at the base and along the stem. The inflorescence consists of a single cluster of many flowers, each with dark brown to black tepals, six stamens with yellowish anthers, and long reddish stigmas. The fruit is a dark, oblong capsule.
