Juncus megacephalus, also known as the bighead rush, is a plant species that is native to the United States. It can be found in freshwater marshes, sand dunes, and disturbed areas in states along the seacoast from Texas to Maryland, as well as in Massachusetts. This perennial herb spreads through underground rhizomes and can grow up to 110 cm tall. Its stems are round and about 3-4 mm in diameter, while its leaves can reach up to 24 cm in length. The plant produces a panicle of up to 20 spherical heads, each containing about 50 straw-colored flowers that are approximately 20 mm in diameter. Juncus megacephalus is typically found at elevations below 100 meters and is an important species in its native habitat.
