Distichia muscoides is a plant species belonging to the rush family Juncaceae, native to the Andes region of South America. It is commonly found in upland wetland areas known as bofedales, where it forms dense cushions of short, evergreen stems and leaves. This plant can grow up to 5 cm per year and is an important component of the cushion bog ecosystem, along with other plants like Plantago rigida and Oreobolus cleefii. The bofedales provide grazing for various animals such as guanacos, vicuñas, and deer, and also serve as a habitat for birds and rodents. However, due to climate change and human activities, the bofedales are shrinking and being converted into less nutritious grasslands. This could have a negative impact on the growth and survival of Distichia muscoides.
