General Uses Top

Suggest a correction!

Common products:
- Food products: young shoots are eaten as a vegetable; roots contain starch and are roasted (Prota4U).

Wood and fiber:
- The stems yield a long, pliable bast fiber used for weaving mats, baskets, and chair seats (Prota4U; Cab abstract on “Bulrush (Schoenoplectus lacustris): industrial utilization as a fiber and thatch source”). In some regions, bundles of whole stems are used for thatching and packing, similar to other bulrushes (European ethnobotany literature).

Colorants and tanning:
- No documented use as a dye or tanning agent for S. lacustris.

Industrial and craft applications:
- Fiber is suitable for cordage and coarse woven goods; stems are assembled as thatch bundles in traditional construction (Prota4U; European building traditions).

Food and beverages (non-medicinal):
- Young shoots may be boiled or roasted and consumed as a vegetable; roots are roasted and eaten for their starch (Prota4U). Consumption is regional and seasonally dependent.

Fragrance and cosmetics:
- No documented use.

Properties relevant to use:
- Stems are flexible and durable when dry, facilitating weaving and thatching; rhizomes store carbohydrates, enabling roasting of roots (Prota4U).

Standards and regulation:
- No specific standards noted for this taxon.

Sustainability and sourcing:
- The species occurs in wetlands and is harvested from wild or semi-wild stands; management to prevent habitat disturbance is advisable (Prota4U).
