Tetraria Beauv. is a genus in the sedge family Cyperaceae, comprising approximately 50–60 species of perennial, rhizomatous graminoids distributed primarily across southern and eastern Africa, with centers of diversity in the Cape Floristic Region and adjacent grassland and fynbos habitats (POWO, 2024). The type species is Tetraria flexuosa (L.f.) C.B.Clarke.

Plants form tufted or spreading clumps with unbranched, trigonous to cylindrical stems and basal leaf sheaths that may be fibrous or papery. The leaves are typically narrow, linear, and grass-like, with entire margins and varying degrees of indumentum. Inflorescences are terminal or axillary spikes arranged in panicles or racemes, with unisexual florets typical of Cyperaceae. Fruits are trigonous nutlets with smooth to ornamented surfaces.

Species occur from coastal dunes and limestone outcrops to mountainous habitats up to 2000 m elevation, with many endemics restricted to specific mountain ranges or vegetation types (Muasya et al., 2009). The genus shows clear vicariant patterns, with related taxa separated by major geographical barriers, reflecting the complex tectonic and climatic history of southern Africa.

Pollination ecology is insufficiently documented, though sedge-like wind pollination is likely, and seed dispersal mechanisms remain largely unstudied. Cytological data are sparse; chromosome numbers around x=26 have occasionally been reported but require verification.

Tetraria has been variously circumscribed, with some species previously placed in Tetraria now included in genera like Schoenus or Trianthola according to recent molecular phylogenetic studies (Cfrontline et al., 2018). Alternative treatments retaining broader generic limits persist, reflecting ongoing taxonomic instability. Resolution requires comprehensive phylogenetic sampling combining morphological and molecular data.

The genus has limited horticultural use, with few species cultivated for ornamental purposes, though native grassland restoration projects occasionally utilize local Tetraria species. No major economic crops or timber species exist within the genus.

Conservation concerns focus on habitat loss from agricultural conversion and urban development, particularly for narrow endemics. Research gaps include reproductive biology, population dynamics, and complete taxonomic resolution across the genus (WFO, 2024).
