Scirpus cyperinus, also known as woolgrass, is a wetland herb found in the eastern United States and eastern Canada. It is often confused as a grass, but it is actually a type of bulrush. This plant has short, tough rhizomes and grows in dense clumps with upright stems and long leaves. Its inflorescence has branches with spikelets covered in reddish, brownish, or black scales, giving it a woolly appearance. Woolgrass can be found in various wet habitats, including marshes and ponds, and is also used by Native Americans for making bags and mats. It is known to hybridize with other related plants and can be found in disturbed habitats as well.
