Schoenus lucidus is a sedge species found only in the western mountains of the Western Cape Province in South Africa. It has a unique inflorescence composed of congested spikes and spikelets, distinguishing it from other related species. Its hairy spikelets and shorter rachis and inflorescence also set it apart from other southern African Schoenus species. The tendency of southern African Schoenus to hybridize with each other makes it difficult to identify this species. It is part of the Cyperaceae family and is closely related to species in the Epischoenus group. It was previously classified under the genus Tetraria, but was transferred to Schoenus to ensure monophyly. S. lucidus is mainly found in the mountains of the Worcester and Ceres regions, at elevations between 900-1700 m, and can thrive in both wet and dry mountain habitats.
