Eleocharis atropurpurea, also known as purple spikerush, is an aquatic plant found in various regions including Africa, Asia, Australia, and Latin America. It is also present in temperate areas of North and South America and Asia, and may have been introduced to Europe. This annual plant grows in wet areas such as ocean shores, rice fields, and irrigation ditches, and can reach a maximum height of ten centimeters. It has reddish-green leaves and thin erect stems, with oval-shaped inflorescences on top that contain at least ten flowers. The flowers are covered by purplish-brown bracts and produce tiny black fruits.
