Cyperus tetraphyllus is an Australian native sedge that is closely related to the papyrus. Growing up to 50 cm high, it is found in high rainfall areas in eastern Australia from Kiama north to Queensland, and is commonly found in and near rainforest. It blooms in spring and summer, and its species name, tetraphyllus, literally translates to "four leaves" - although the plant is not clearly four leaved, the meaning of the name is obscure.
